The smaller reason is that even opt-in anonymity is just systemically sketchy. A Dictator or a criminal can just hide their money. Yes you have as a democratic citizen privacy but you also want as a democratic citizen to not have a Dictator steal all your money and send it to a tax haven and that’s when you as a citizen will ban it yourself.

Now the BIGGEST reason is that you can’t even do it partially like we do it with cash. Cash is simply extremely heavy to transfer billions or trillions so it will always be the venue of petty theft or at least small scale when it gets to people stealing your money. But a Dictator will be able to transfer billions on chain given enough liquidity.

PS As an example 10 billion is 100 tonnes in 100 notes, it’s basically impossible to launder it reliably compared to a very liquid blockchain (i.e. you can never allow an anonymous blockchain to ever become very big and successful even if the anonymity is opt-in).
