Been in crypto payments for a while, and the pace of regulation in the last year or two has been intense. MiCA in the EU, tighter AML requirements almost everywhere, more KYC providers plugged into everything, travel rule enforcement actually happening now instead of just being a theoretical requirement. On one hand I get it, some of this genuinely protects people from scams and makes the space more legitimate. That part is fair.
But there’s another side to it that’s harder to sit with. Every new rule means another form, another verification step, another company somewhere with a copy of your ID and your transaction history. You don’t really get to opt out, you just agree, because the alternative is not being able to use anything at all. It adds up to this feeling that your financial life isn’t fully yours anymore, someone’s always watching one layer above you, and you just have to trust that it’s handled responsibly.
The whole reason crypto felt interesting to me in the first place was the idea of having more control, more privacy, less permission needed to just move your own money. And slowly a lot of that is getting regulated back into looking like the traditional system it was supposed to be an alternative to.
Still holding onto the idea that this isn’t the end state. Tech and habits shift, privacy-focused chains keep improving, and there’s still a real appetite out there for tools that give people back some of that control. Just feels like right now we’re in the compliance-heavy phase before that swings back a bit.
Anyone else feel like the space is trading away the thing that made it interesting in the first place?
