The president of El Salvador and Bitcoin advocate, Nayib Bukele canceled his appearance at the Miami Bitcoin Conference 2022, scheduled on April 6-9.

Due to a surge in gang-related violence in El Salvador, Bukele declared a state of emergency in the country 12 days ago. The first wave of crime started on March 25, resulting in 87 deaths in 72 hours. Local authorities have arrested nearly 7,000 gang members since then.

Bukele, who made Bitcoin a legal tender in El Salvador, acknowledged the country’s delicate situation and canceled his trip to Miami.

“I have just made the decision of canceling my participation in the conference due to unforeseen circumstances in my home country that require my full attention as president,”

he said.

The conference, organized by Bitcoin Magazine, is marked as the largest Bitcoin event in history. Bukele was appointed as one of the main speakers and would cover topics such as the process El Salvador undertook in adopting Bitcoin and the opportunities cryptocurrency is providing to the citizens.
